Chapter 9

My cell phone started ringing. “Should I answer it?” I thought.

“Don't answer it Dude,” Jack insisted. “Your day has been going bad enough.”

“It sure has.” I certainly could not deny that. I stared at the unfamiliar phone number. “I don't recognize this number,” I uttered.

“That's exactly why you should not answer it. It's bad news, Dude. I am telling you. It's bad news,” Jack remarked.

“I bet you're right. That's nothing but trouble.” I decided to let it ring. I did not answer it.

“Look outside!” Jack's attention moved from my ringing cell phone to a vehicle that was in my driveway.

“Who is that?” I anxiously asked.

“It's a truck.” Jack replied as he gazed at the vehicle.

“Yeah. I can see that, but that's not a regular truck. No it isn't. It is a cable company truck,” I said.

A man walked to my front door. I opened the door.

“Why you are not the cute, young lady that I am accustomed to seeing here.” He seemed disappointed.

“No. She's not here.” I glanced at the paper he was holding.

He gazed down. “I need to collect money for your past due bill,” he said. “The amount you owe is $322.22. If you pay the outstanding amount due of $161.11 right now, your cable can stay on. Otherwise, your services will be disconnected immediately. That includes your phone, internet, and cable.”

“I am afraid that will not be possible. I cannot pay you anything now. I am penniless, and I don't even have a job.” I took a bill from his hand.

“I am sorry to hear that,” he replied. “He jotted some information on a form. “Your cable, phone, and internet services will be discontinued in a few minutes.”

Jack left my side. He shook his head as he paced around the house once again.

“Is this your disconnect notice from the power company?” He removed a slip of paper from underneath his clipboard.

“Let me look at it.” I took the notice from his hand.

“Yes,” I replied as I read the paper. “Thank you. I was wondering what happened to it. Where did you find it?” I asked.

“Is that your dog over there?” he asked.

“Yes.” I answered. “His name is Max.”

“He is a very friendly dog. He had the notice in his mouth when he greeted me a few moments ago,” the cable man replied.

“That explains the missing notice. I guess Max took it,” I said.

“I am sorry about your situation. I am going to the back of your house now. Good-bye.” The cable man went to the back of the house.

“Bye,” I said.

Exhausted from thinking about all of the things that had happened in my life over the last several hours, I decided to sit down again. Jack stopped pacing and took a seat beside me. All he wanted to talk about was the large, red envelope. He kept hounding me about it. He kept nagging me. “Open it. You better open it,” he persisted. Finally, I gave in.

“Alright! Alright! Okay,” I said. “I will open it.” The bold, black letters on the envelope really gave me an uneasy feeling.
